Renovations at Christ Church - April & May 2010

After many months of planning, and even longer preparation and careful financial stewardship, on 18th April 2010 Christ Church temporarily closed its doors for extensive renovations, following the blessing at the conclusion of the special Evensong Service featuring the Choir of St Paul's Cathedral. In the following weeks the walls of the Church were prepared,sanded and re-painted, tiled flooring was laid in all the Entry and Side Porches, and in the North and South Transepts, the main Nave and Sanctuary was re-carpetted, timber flooring was re-polished, the wiring for the Church sound system was re-housed, and the church pews, lecturn and altar were re-polished. During this time Sunday and Weekday Services were held in the Parish Hall and Schoolroom. All this involved a huge effort - the Church had to be stripped of everything easily moved, and the Hall set up to serve as a worship space for some five weeks. The Church pews had to be moved to allow the floor of the Nave to be prepared, then returned to the Nave to allow new flooring for the Transepts to be installed... only to be moved back into those Transepts to allow the new carpet to be laid in the Nave....Whilst all this was somewhat of an inconvenience - and could not have been achieved without the great efforts and cooperation of everyone in the parish - clergy, vestry, assistants, flower arrangers, sidespersons, Meals Programme volunteers, choir and organist, and parishioners, of course- it allowed us all to worship in a different way, in a different space, for a time... and perhaps to appreciate afresh the beautiful space that we are priviliged to worship in, every week. Services returned to the Church building on Sunday 30th May 2010.
